Understanding LED Distribution Types

LED technology allows us to predict better than ever where the light will go. There are 6 types of LED Light Distribution, however, each may vary slightly depending on the environment and the application.

Founded in 1995, VL Lighting Solutions is a leading Canadian lighting manufacturer providing innovative, energy efficient solutions for our clients’ lighting requirements. You can rely on VL lighting Solutions for superior quality and innovative designs involving optically precise commercial and industrial lighting products.

Type I

Type I is a two-way lateral distribution, with two principal light concentrations facing the opposite direction, with a preferred lateral width of 15 Degrees.  This is applicable when the lights are placed at the same height as the width of the path it is lighting up.

This is ideal for walkways, paths, and sidewalks, and is meant to be placed close to the center of the path. This provides good lighting for smaller paths.

Type II

Type II has two principal light concentrations facing different directions, with a preferred lateral width of 25 Degrees.  This is applicable when the lights are placed near or at one side of the roadway. The mounting height of Type II LED distributions should be 1.75 times the width of the roadway it is lighting up.

This is ideal for walkways, on-ramps, and entrance roadways, as well as long narrow paths. They are meant to be placed close to or at the edge of the path. You’ll find these on mostly smaller side streets and jogging paths.

Type III

Type III has a preferred lateral width of 40 Degrees and is intended to be mounted at the side of a medium-sized roadway. The mounting height of Type III LED distributions should be 2.75 times the width of the roadway it is lighting up.

This is ideal for roadways, parking areas, and anywhere where a larger area needs lighting. Type III needs to be placed at the side of the area so that it can project outward and fill the area with light.

Type IV

Type IV has a preferred lateral width of 60 Degrees and is intended to be mounted at the side of a roadway. The mounting height of Type IV LED distributions should be 3.7 times the width of the roadway it is lighting up.

Type IV produces a semi-circle of light which means it is ideal for mounting on the sides of buildings and businesses to illuminate parking areas and the perimeter area of the building.

Type V

Type V has a circular distribution and has the same intensity at all angles. It’s intended to be mounted at the center of large roadways, at the center island of a parkway, and intersections.

Type V is also used for commercial parking areas and other large areas where sufficient, evenly distributed light is necessary.

Type VS

Type VS (Square) has a square distribution and has the same intensity at all angles. It’s intended to be mounted at the center of large roadways, at the center island of a parkway, and intersections.

Type VS is also used for commercial parking areas and other large areas where sufficient, evenly distributed light is necessary. Type VS Is used when a more defined area is needed and shouldn’t exceed certain limits.
